Good Grief! It has been a long month or two. We managed to get the 1st and 2nd year Med students through finals, and the 3rd years through their clinical skills practice sessions. We finally can take a breather for a week or two.
A few milestones came up last month. It's been 5 years since Jen and I bought our first (and current) home, the day after the 2003 Moore tornado that touched down literally 5 blocks north of the house. Needless to say, we visited the house on signing day to make sure it was still there.
It has also been 10 years since I graduated high school. Our 10 year reunion is coming up in a few weeks, and I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone has been doing.
And Parker can pee in the Potty now. Best Milestone Yet!

Back with a Vengeance
That's right, I'm back in the ink blog game. I've had a rough time over the last month or two, but now all is well.
Part of my return comes from my determination to use my Tablet PC in slate mode unless absolutely necessary (like video editing).
The more that I use my pen, the more I really like it. I haven't written this much since back in school, I've actually kind of missed holding a pencil, it makes interactions with my PC more personal, I guess.
I'm still working out the kinks of using a Portrait viewing mode, I'm not totally happy with the taskbar at the moment, and I need to work with the handwriting recognition a bit more. I'm impressed that Vista Can decipher my chicken scratch as it is, but it could be better.

My Birthday Wish
My birthday is coming up this weekend, and I've been busy trying to figure out what kind of present I want. This morning I figured it out:

Back from the Dead
I'm recovering from whatever Ebola-flu bug has stricken my town. There is nothing like having a fever of 104° F and being unable to sit up from being to dizzy. I'm back to about 75%, hoping to be back to normal by the weekend.
Blah. I'm going to take a nap during my lunch break.

Fluxxed
So I just got back from picking up a prescription at Walgreens. But this was not to be an ordinary pharmacy run, because I had the honor of parking next to an honest to goodness Delorean DMC-12 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Lorean_DMC-12).
My generation grew up with Back to the Future (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_to_the_Future_trilogy), and I've always been a fan-boy, so every DMC I see is a real treat. The kicker was the cheesy-but-cool vanity plate: FLUXXED (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flux_capacitor)

The Flying Bug
[+/-] Hide/Show Text[+/-] Hide/Show Text
Everyone seems to have a passion in life.
For my father, it's hunting. My wife is desperately in love with the TV show Lost (http://abc.go.com/primetime/lost/index?pn=index). My 3 year old son is addicted to "choo-choos (http://brio.knex.com/customer/home.php?cat=375)." As for me, I tend to fluctuate between my interests. At times, I share choo-choo fever with my son. Other times, my green thumb kicks in and I'll spend hours on end working in the yard. Of course, I love gadgets and technology, but every few months I get tired of it and go back to basics.
But, I recently came to realize that my passion is flying. I would love nothing more than to have my own plane (http://www.newpiper.com/aircraft/meridian/) and be able to take off anytime and go anywhere (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Martin). Granted, I have personally never piloted a plane, nor do I have millions of dollars of disposable income to afford my own plane. But if I could, I would quit my job in a heartbeat (the job I love, by the way) to go to flight school (http://www.aviation.ou.edu/about.html), get my commercial pilot's license, and start my own charter service (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wings_(TV_series)) in the Caribbean or Gulf Coast. So, if any of you have a large amount of cash to donate to my cause, I'll gladly accept it.

TGIF
It has been a long week.
I've been tied up working on the report from the IMSH and running back and forth on campus. And both the kids have been sick. At least it's Friday. I'm looking forward to a weekend of lounging and playing Stick Arena (http://www.xgenstudios.com/play/stickarena), my latest time killer.
Something cool happened this week, though. I had sent Sumocat (http://sumocat.blogspot.com/) a note telling him that I was using Build 52 (http://www.markandtanya.us/scribbles/Build52v2.html) and how cool it was. The next day he mentioned my blog on his site, which was pretty neat. A few days later Gottabemobile (http://www.gottabemobile.com/) had a screenshot from my last blog entry:
image goes here
This is cool but now the world knows I can't draw :)
Thanks for the Shout Out!

Addictions
I don't drink coffee. Not usually. I might have a cup on those few occasions that I was unable to sleep the night before, or a pre-bottled Frappuccino (http://www.starbucks.com/grocery/frappuccino.asp) when I need to stay up late. This amounts to maybe once a month at most. Well, all that changed with my trip to San Diego. I decided to get a small iced latte (http://www.starbucks.com/retail/nutrition_beverage_detail.asp?selProducts=%7B34D7DC79%2DD2E0%2D487E%2DA0D3%2DCE1EC7D83680%7D) while waiting for my plane. It was delicious! I did the same for my flight's second leg. Of course, the conference hotel had a Starbucks (www.starbucks.com) in the lobby, and I found myself drawn to it after every workshop. I enjoyed a few more lattes on my trip back, and found myself driving to the nearest Starbucks upon my return home. I haven’t been back in a few days, and I've noticed the world seems a bit bleaker. I'm afraid I'm hooked.

Just for Fun...
Just for fun, I thought I would post my current project, a wrap-up report on my trip to the International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare. I'm impressed that I can write that small on my tablet.

Sick Kids and Ink
Well, Parker is sick again. He has some respiratory issue. Reactive Air way Dis (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/reactive-airway-disease/AN01420)ease, to be exact. At least, that's what the discharge sheet says. My wife told me the doctor never came in to discuss his diagnosis. In fact, I knew the diagnosis before she did because I looked at the discharge sheet before she did. It irritates me that the ER doc didn't talk to them. I can understand that they are busy, but it shouldn't be the patient's responsibility to hit the web to find out what "Reactive Airway Disease" is. (It's when a child cannot breathe well, btw. Not necessarily asthma, but similar. I'm hoping more acute than asthma as well.) I'm sure he'll be fine, he has his regular 3-year checkup in the morning, perhaps his doctor can fill us in.
Also, in totally unrelated news, I finally started using Sumocat's (http://sumocat.blogspot.com/) Build 52 (http://www.markandtanya.us/scribbles/Build52v2.html) for my Ink Blogging. I've known of it for some time, just never tried using it fit now. It's awesome!
